March special events

The Lutheran Church of Togo invited a group of six Christians called CROSS FIRE. Cross Fire is a Christian Organization which goes around the world  to share the Gospel  to different countries.  The first aim of this group is to interact with other Christians and church bodies.  And this year in the month of March ,Grace Lutheran in Lomé was honored to host this group composed of the following  members whom I would like to introduce to you.  Luke Kuenzli was the Leader of the group. He is an alumni of capital University, where he studied religion with a Music minor. His from Cincinnati, Ohio. Prosper Resserne Patale is from Cameroun, East Africa. He graduated from teacher’s training school in N’Gaoundédé in 200. He also has a degree in computers and has been using to work in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cameroun’s print shop. Sonja Hogaard Larsen is from Nr. Bork, Denmark. She grew up on a farm along with four siblings. She loves being outdoors, learning new things, reading, sports, and listening music. Lindsay Mcintosh is from Verona, New Jersey. She has been living in New Jersey for a year. This is  Lindsay’s second year on team. Lindsay is very excited to be travelling to West Africa. The next member on the list is Tiffany Jansen from Volga, South Dakota. She grew up Lutheran and recently graduated from Midland Lutheran College as a Youth and family Ministry major with Religion, philosophy and Music minors. She is interested in discussing religion, travelling, learning about other cultures. The last but not the least is Andrienne Troemel. She graduated with B.A. in elementary Education and art in 2006 and spent her first year teaching jr; high in Lutheran school in  San Antonio. Since graduation she continued to feel God leading her toward missions. She is thrilled for the opportunity to serve internationally with Cross Fire.

On their arrival on March 17,from Benin, a neighboring  country , I went to pick them at the Border. Despite the fatigue from travelling they insisted on performing at the evening. After their introduction to the Congregation the floor was given to each of Cross Fire delegation to speak more about themselves and make   themselves more acquainted to the congregation. On that day the only activity was singing. They sung many songs in honor of our Lord. The amazing part of the show was that they sang beautifully in our local language which is Ewe. The whole congregation was stirred up with this wonderful performance.

On the second day they sang but the evening was really marked by puppets talking; a sketch of Biblical stories relative to the bad consequences of Jealousy and hatred. But the lesson connected to this story is love and especially how love of Christ can liberate us from evil thoughts. Some children who had never seen this type of activity were really scared and started crying. We were compelled to calm them. However  this little incident the performance went well and ended up with laughter and excitement. According to the program, the third evening was for  the Grace Lutheran church to exhibit it’s culture and show the African way of worshipping which we did with joy and happiness. Before then “tracts” from children in the States were shared among the children in the Church. On these tracts one could read: “Jesus loves you “etc… One of the events worth mentioning is that some families from the Congregation invited the members of the Cross Fire to eat African dishes which they reported very delicious. On March 19, 2009, they left for the North.

April  Easter Celebration

On Friday April 10, we had a night vigil with almost the half of the Congregation. We prayed and meditated on the suffering, and the death of our Lord Jesus and its real significance in our lives as we cogitate on how Jesus’ death was and is love in action, a ransom that liberates us  from the hands of Devil and therefore He, Jesus Christ  paid for  a debt we can never pay for.

. We prayed for the Lutheran Church of Togo; for her Leaders and members. We also prayed for  LCMS World mission, for Togo partners who constitute the supporting hands for our mission activities, for the spiritual and physical growth of Grace Lutheran Church, Lomé whose vision in short term is to send laborers to implant Churches in Lomé’ s vicinity. We went home on Saturday morning at 4 o’clock  Am

On  Sunday we sang Halleluiah for He is risen indeed.  We worshipped the risen Lord . And On Monday evening the whole Congregation gathered together. We had a great celebration -singing praises to our Lord and sharing meal together.

It is interesting to know that Grace Lutheran Church has been on air on three consecutive occasions.   On April 10, 2009 I was invited by Radio Victoire, a Christian Radio in Lomé to speak about Easter and its impact on the Christian faith, which I think I did well with the help of the Holy Spirit. The following week a continental Radio, African Numero Un invited me to have a debate on healing through prayers. It was one hour and half debate which was broadcast in Libreville, Gabon and in Paris. The third opportunity was on April 25, 2008. RTDS, a private Television invited me for a live debate on Christian issues.  We were so glad we got these opportunities to preach Christ on the Air for the whole nation and beyond. All these events were free of charge. That is by grace.

The end of 2008 has given us another great opportunity to express our gratitude and to speak loud about our sole Savoir Jesus Christ. Many people here think that this Christmas period is a time for gifts. They are not wrong in the broader sense of the term for kids, elderly people lovely ones also wait for amorous expression via these gifts, but the best gift our God could give us is the gift of His only begotten Son for our salvation. All other gifts though very appreciable and needed are expression of the horizontal love that our Lord recommend us children of the same Father.

At Grace Lutheran Church before the evening services, the chapel was decorated by Rachel. The Chruch service was little bit informal in that we asked a group to play after the Service. For the members asked that there be entertainement so that they stay awake. We started the Church service at 9 pm. After worship songs and praises we meditated on this special event..

On 25 December, another factor made this day special. We got boxes from Trinity Lutheran Church, Temecula. The boxes contained little boxes with different gifts for the kids and important little decorations with the words of God written on them so that the kids and the parents read what Jesus really means in our lives. The gifts were shared among the kids after the Church service.

In the same month we were blessed by a donation of 137 Bibles. This donation as a manna for us came from Eric and Mary in Florida; Eric was at the Church service in Sanford where I preached and talked about our mission activities in Togo during my last visit in the States. It is a real blessing. We really need these sorts of materials to implement our aggressive outreach in our area.

In January we had one baptism. It is interesting and amazing to note that on  the day of the baptism we also received new comers. These new comers and those are not yet baptized are receiving instructions and baptism and later on the Lord's supper. We pray that the Lord continously keep them in the true faith.

Besides the activities in Lomé, I had a meeting with Rev Bigbi, the President of ELT at Kara the Capital City of Kozah in the North of Togo. We discussed about the projects and programs of the Church. I will be going to Dapaong in the first week of March for an International meeting with other Lutheran Churches of French speaking Africa .

The  months of January and February are marked with regular services and dood to door evangelisation with the idea to start big campaigns shortly with suffisant materials to share among the attendances. The matches our team will be playing with other teams will serve as an instrument to attract many who will be hearing the Gospel .

On the eve of the Easter we had night vigil with the attendance almost half of the congregation. This night vigil was one of the activities which marked the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord.

On Sunday March 23, 2008, the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ was entwined with the baptism of seven souls. We baptized 6 kids amongst whom one newly born baby boy named Gideon. In addition to the kids we also baptized an adult. In Grace Lutheran Church, Lomé, we had, on that day, more than one reason to celebrate Easter with ostentation.

North of Togo

Another event worth mentioning is my trip to the Northern part of our country precisely in Dapaong and vicinity. On the invitation of the Lutheran Church of Togo, I left Lomé, the Capital city of Togo, for Dapaong on April 8, 2008. It took me 8 hours to arrive in Dapaong. The main reason of my trip to the North was to meet with all the pastors, the vicars of the Lutheran Church of Togo. It was also a great opportunity for me as the President of CAC ( The Governing Board of the Center) to meet with the Staff of CLET, the Theological Center of Dapaong. This Center trains future leaders or pastors of all the member Churches of the Union composed of Confessional Lutheran Churches of French speaking Africa.

According to the program elaborated conjointly with the Church, I was to meet first with the pastors and then with the vicars.

On 9 April, the meeting took place at the Church. We talked about strategies we need to implement so that the Lutheran Church in Togo grow spiritually and physically. We have noticed that despite our good doctrine the  Lutheran Church in Togo has a long way to go in terms of evangelisation and Church planting.

The following day we met with the vicars. In a nutshell it was about raising awareness which seems to be wanting. Our meeting with the vicars brought in them vigour and energy. Because some of them took the vicarage in a slight manner. We encouraged them to continue their vicarage with abnegation. The impression they gave us was that of positive feelings about the divine call to be good shepherd to God’s flock. We pray that the Holy Spirit convince them of this noble task so that they face the challenges with boldness.

The next meeting was with the CEC, ( the Executive Committee of the Center) Though the agenda was different from that of the other meetings, it was essentially centered on the challenges the Center is facing notably human resources in terms of Teachers and students. If there is a common point in the agenda with the other meetings it is the raising of awareness among the members churches so that together as one we face the challenges. The staff of the Center is giving the best it can so that the Students get a good training.

On April 11,we also visited two rural areas namely Nano and Lokpano. What is special about Lokpano is that it hosted the first missionary to start his mission activities in Togo in 1997.

We arrived first at Nano about 9 am the following day. The pastor, elders and some members of the Church were waiting for us. Before the meeting we visited the house in which some Missionaries lived.

We had an excellent meeting. We talked about the future of the Church in Nano in particular and of the Church in Togo in general. I spoke in French and Pres. Bigbi interpreted in Moba, their local language. We ended the meeting at noon. And Rev Bigbi and I headed to Lokpano.

Our going to Lokpano coincided with the day of their monthly meeting. Instead of meeting only the Pastor and some members of the Church we got the opportunity to meet with other pastors and elders of other villages. It is interesting to note that the choice of Nano and Lokpano is very crucial. Since we could not cover all the areas where Lutheran Churches are implanted we met with other pastors of other areas near Nano and Lopkano for these areas are the major areas covering the remote areas of the District.

The agenda in Lokpano was almost the same with a slight difference relative to the area. Before the meeting we visited the houses the missionaries used to live

. The meeting conceived positive ideas about the future of the Lutheran Church in Togo. With the help of the Lord we will implement these strategies so that the Lutheran church in Togo become self propagating, and self supporting. Pres. Bigbi did a good job by translating in Moba all that I said in French so that the message touch their hearts. It is amazing to notice that all the areas we went to requested that similar meetings, seminars and conventions be held so that all these good ideas be propagated to all the areas. The meeting ended with a nice meal with a special soup for “guests.”

After the Christmas and New Year celebrations, we were waiting and preparing for another important event. After almost one year of confirmation classes with studious meditations on the Word of God, we set the date of February 20, 2008 to confirm the new members. On that date 15 members were confirmed. One could see in the faces of these newly confirmed the expression of joy and happiness.

This day had a special mark with other activities. It was a long day but full of excitement. We held two elections. We elected Youth Committee staff composed of seven members.

Since AIDS is one of the deadly pandemics on African Continent in general and in Togo in particular, the Church has thought of forming a Committee which will be looking into this pandemic. To this end we have elected a Committee staff of six members comprising a jurist or legal expert and a Sociologist. The Committee will be working on some programs such as prevention (abstinence) Program, medication program for those infected, care program for orphans and widows and widowers even raising awareness among the population for those who are healthy.

Besides the confirmation, the Lord has added to His Kingdom two babies through baptism.

For Easter celebrations we are looking forward to baptizing four children. We are vividly preparing for the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

December 2007 precisely the year 2007 is gone but the love of God endures forever. We welcomed two children in our midst through baptism, a baby girl and a baby boy, to end the year. The baby boy named Emmanuel was baptized on December 16, 2007; he is four months old. The girl six months old, named Ruth was baptized on the eve of Christmas.

On the eve of Christmas a small crowd came to our Church to watch a sketch. The actors were the members of Grace Lutheran Church, Lomé. The sketch started at 9 am and ended at 11 pm. This drew many people from the neighborhood, an occasion to preach Jesus as the sole Savior of the world.  In addition to those seated in the yard, were visitors who, standing at the open gate, watched and listened to the actors.

After the play we had church service accompanied by singing and dancing. A musical group from Ghana, a neighboring country came to render this event more vibrating. The celebrating of our Lord’s nativity ended at 2 am on Dec 25 2007.

The event of December 31, 2007 was another component worth mentioning. The only missing link during this celebration was the sketch. This time the event was exclusively to praising, glorifying and honoring our Lord who has showered us with many blessings. It was a thanksgiving event to the Lord for keeping us in the true faith and providing us with our essential needs. An important factor worth mentioning was the opportunity the event has offered us to share the love of Jesus Christ to brothers and sisters in Christ and to the unchurched as well

We were surprised to see such a crowd attending our Church service in the open air. We started our activities at 9 pm which was not the scheduled time. The time initially set up was 8 pm. Unfortunately lateness was part of our habits which we have to deal and correct with love. The electrical atmosphere of the event dispelled or alleviated the worries of the lateness.

We started with praise songs to our Lord. Then came the Church service. After what, we continued the activities with a series of prayers which led us to enter the New Year 2008. The rest of the time was merry making, glorifying the Lord for His love and compassion. Though there was only water , no food nor drinks, the event was more than a festival.

Baptism:

As the 2007 comes to a close, we have thought in Grace Lutheran Church, Lomé to brief you of the activities in the course of the year. We have so far registered six events of baptism in addition to the big event of 31 December 2006. In total we have baptized 56 souls within a year: fifty members in December 2006 and six from march to november 2007.On March 11, 2007, we baptized a University student in Lomé and who is a native of Dapaong. The happy event was followed by an infant baptism. A baby girl, whose parents are from the Southern part of Togo, was baptized on March 25, 2007.

In the month of September we also registered the baptism of two male adults. One is a student at High school, a native of Kara, a city in the Northern part of the country. The other baptized who is originating from Defalé, a town in the North, has his « private business ».

The latest event of baptism occurred in November. On November 4, 2007, we baptized two infants. A baby boy who is two weeks old. The other infant is a girl. She is 6 months old.

In a nutshell we baptized seventeen children and thirty nine adults. We can say that there are two modes of growth in a Church, in the Lutheran Church. In our case the modes are infant baptism and newly convert who share their washing with old members of the Church. We give thanks to our Lord for blessing our Church. From the baptized we confirmed twenty six who regularly come to the Lord’s Table. The remaining 13 members and new comers are attending Bible classes for baptism and confirmation.

Other activities:

The Church has a choir which comes together twice in a week for rehearsal.  The Church has set up three committees: Women’s committee of four members who come together to think about strategies and work out action plan in the implementation of designed projects of the Church. The Parish Executive Committee of four members elaborates projects and executes the resolutions of the Church .

The other committee is what we call in French « Comité de suivi » which is in charge of going to some church members who have been absent for two or for Sundays. This committee goes to their houses to see if they need spiritual assistance such prayers (when they are sick) or encouragement in their weakness.

Another ministry is the sport ministry. This ministry is one of the instruments for outreach. The soccer team will be playing matches in schools and with other teams who are not Christians. During these tournaments both the winners and the losers will be receiving Bibles and Lutheran literature. Moreover after the matches we will be preaching the Gospel to them. We are sure the Holy Sprit will circumcise their hearts.

The other ministries which we will set up are Youth ministry, Adult ministry and Ministry for the Elderly.

The many challenges we face this year in terms of means to implement our strategies did not allow us to really reach out to neighborhood and beyond. One of them is the bad shape of the Chapel.

The entire Congregation is composed of twenty eight families and nineteen singles (mostly youth). The size of families varies between two and eight (the largest family); the total number of the kids is sixty. About six to ten kids come to church service without being accompanied by their parents. We count in our midst 138 members with regular attendance of eighty and above.

There are two events we have not yet registered: wedding and death.

Thirst for God's Word

On Sunday March 18, 2007, we distributed about 100 Bibles to the members of Grace Lutheran Church, Lome. The need for the Bibles was pressing. And the Lord has touched the hearts of the members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church NJ to donate 200 Bibles.

It was a moment of joy and thanksgiving to our Lord for this wonderfull gift.

After the Church service when all the members were going home holding their Bibles in their hands, the neighborhood was also eager to get the Bibles. Some people came to me asking to receive the Bible because they were looking forward to this moment for a long time. I was so glad to notice that people are really thirsty for the Good News, the living Word which is the light to our feet.

The Church has also recorded the following precedents events: On March 2, and March 5 2007, Rev. Pastor Michael Kwaku Amegah was elected President of Confessional Lutheran Churches of French Speaking Africa Union and Vice President of the Christian Council of Togo. The Church celebrated these events in thanksgiving to our Lord Jesus Christ for showering His Grace on His servant Rev. Amegah whom He has called in His service.

Soccer Team: One of our ministries has been rendered effective on Sunday January 7, 2007. The soccer team which is one of the activities of the Sports Ministry is composed of twenty four members who will be trained by Coach Efoue who has been a player of our National Team,Togo. We are blessed because the Coach has voluntered to train these players and give them adequate techniques so that they could offer themselves in the best way. The name of the team is Ambassadors of Christ. The Ambassadors of Christ will be playing matches with school teams and other teams in urban areas and rural areas as well.

The goal of "Eglise Luthérienne du Togo, Paroisse la Grâce,Lome" ( Grace Lutheran Church, Lome) is to use this channel to bring the Gospel to the unchurched and by the help of the Holy Spirit bring the unchurched to the Lord as many as He wills .

On Sunday we blessed the team at the Church and we are sending them to play not for money but to fetch souls who will be coming to Bible classes and attending the the Church services for their spiritual growth.

With the help of the Holy Spirit we want to turn the passion for sports into the passion for worshiping the Lord of Lords or intertwine both. We pray that the Lord give us more insights to effectively serve Him through this vessel. Our Sports Ministry will be including female soccer team, basket ball team and other activities as the Lord wills

Baptism: On Dec. 31, 2006, in other words, twenty-nine days after my ordination, Eglise Lutherienne du Togo (Lutheran Church of Togo, Lome) has witnessed another important event. Since august 2006, the new members of the congregation have been attending Bible classes. Though the Bible classes consisted in teaching of our Lutheran confessions, we concentrated on baptism. We focalized on Baptism and original sin, baptism for forgiveness and salvation, and especially on infant baptism which seems to be an issue here in Togo and in areas where the charismatic movement is predominant. Some people are taught that children need to be conscious of things they do and repent of theirs sins at the age of accountability. But we Lutherans confess and teach that it is God who works in Baptism and that baptism is a means of grace. The work of salvation in us is 100% of the Lord.

We thank God that the new converts were convinced by the Holy Spirit that they are sinners and need forgiveness from our Lord and have received the word of God with enthusiasm and have accepted to be baptized and to have the children baptized.

These newly converts received Jesus Christ as their sole Savior and it was in the atmosphere of joy and happiness that the rite of Baptism took place. The adults outnumbered the children. The age of the children ranges from 6 months to 11 years.

In a nutshell, we baptized thirty six souls: twenty two adults and fourteen children. We praise the Lord for His grace and abundant love for His children. Through baptism He has declared the newly converts His children.

We pray that our Lord Jesus Christ, who has begun this work in them, continue to work His will in them in their daily life in faith.

Nouvelles

La réunion s’est bien déroulée. Il est intéressant de noter que le choix de Nano et Lopkano  était judicieux. La raison en est que le temps qui nous est imparti ne nous permettait de couvrir tous les lieux ou villages où l’Eglise Luthérienne est implantée. Ainsi les leaders des villages étaient invités de venir soit à Nano soit à Lokpano pour nous rencontrer ;

 Nous nous préparons activement pour la célébration des Pâques qui marquent la Résurrection de notre Seigneur ;
